For schema-decoded configuration, express optional-field defaults with Effect Schema decoding defaults rather than fallback expressions at consumption sites. Decode imported configuration with S.decodeUnknownEffect, and expose the schema’s Encoded type for caller-authored configuration so defaulted fields remain optional.
